There are other good reasons to sell books from your website, and there\u2019s an equal number of reasons not to.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the information you need to make an informed decision about whether you should be selling directly to readers.<\/p>\n

Reasons to sell your books from your website<\/h2>\n
There are many reasons to consider doing this, including:<\/p>\n
You\u2019ll earn more money from each sale.<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Your per-book profit will increase, which can help fund fees you\u2019ll pay any service provider (including PayPal) you contract with for your e-commerce process.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll also need a robust social media network of people in your target audience. (\u201cA lot\u201d of followers isn\u2019t enough \u2013 they need to be the right followers.)<\/p>\n<p>Without a strong fan base ready, willing, and able to buy directly from you, the effort you put into setting up e-commerce might not be the best use of your resources.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Most consumers want to buy from trusted retailers with established systems and processes.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>They\u2019re skeptical about your ability to deliver the goods. It\u2019s why artists and crafters sell from Etsy rather than their own websites.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also why \u201cauthor websites\u201d isn’t one of the answers to the question posed in the title of recent <em>New York Times<\/em> article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/30\/books\/books-to-buy-price-selection-authors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Where Should You Buy Your Books?<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How I do it<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m one who does sell directly to my audience \u2013 authors like you.<\/p>\n<p>My short e-book on a very specific topic is <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3nREC2s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available on Amazon<\/a> in the usual nonfiction e-book format, but <a href=\"https:\/\/build-book-buzz.teachable.com\/p\/get-your-book-in-the-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the PDF I sell on my website<\/a> is highly designed with graphic elements that make it easier to follow my instructions. I sell and deliver it on <a href=\"https:\/\/teachable.sjv.io\/XxNE1X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teachable<\/a>, the platform I use for my online courses. (Selecting the \u201cTraining\u201d option in the top toolbar of this site takes visitors to <a href=\"https:\/\/build-book-buzz.teachable.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my Teachable store<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>If I wasn’t set up for e-commerce already, I\u2019d look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-junkie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E-Junkie<\/a>. I know several authors who use and like it.<\/p>\n<p>I promote the <a href=\"https:\/\/build-book-buzz.teachable.com\/p\/get-your-book-in-the-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDF version\u2019s sales page<\/a> rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3nREC2s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the book\u2019s Amazon detail page<\/a> because as noted, I believe the PDF\u2019s interior design makes it more useful. As a result, and even though the PDF sales page includes a link to Amazon for those who prefer that option, I sell more from my site than I do on Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>I’m able to sell directly to readers because I\u2019ve worked hard to establish a network of thousands of smart authors who see and appreciate the value in what I provide. Without that, I\u2019m certain that I\u2019d struggle to sell e-books from my site.<\/p>\n<h2>How can you do it?<\/h2>\n<p>Other people can do a much better job of providing instruction on how to get set up to sell your books from your website than I can. You need technology that automates as much of the process as possible so you can fill e-book orders even while you\u2019re on vacation (print books require human involvement, of course).<\/p>\n<h2>What have you decided?<\/h2>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve learned how this works and what\u2019s required, and you\u2019ve done the math to calculate what it will cost you and what you\u2019ll earn per sale, are you going to start selling books from your site?<\/p>\n<p>If you are, good for you!
