In addition to teaching authors how to market their books, I work as a freelance writer<\/a>. I research and write reported articles for magazines and businesses.<\/p>\n

Nearly every assignment requires me to find people \u2013 usually experts, but not always \u2013 to interview and quote. I use a range of resources and strategies to find them.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been doing this for a couple of decades, so I have a lot of experience finding people to interview, then working with them to get the information I need.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly.<\/p>\n

Today, we\u2019re going to talk about the ugly.<\/p>\n

How to make sure you don\u2019t get publicity<\/h2>\n
What\u2019s ugly? Ugly is behavior that guarantees that I won\u2019t quote you.<\/p>\n
Sometimes it\u2019s intentional, sometimes it isn\u2019t. But it still results in no interview. And no interview means you won\u2019t enjoy the business-building, book-selling benefits that come with publicity.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s how to make sure you don\u2019t snag that media interview that can sell books, position you as an authority, and drive traffic to your site.<\/p>\n
1. Act like you\u2019re doing me a big favor.<\/strong><\/h3>\n
<\/iframe><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/cbc-schitts-creek-kBktJ9XBZf1m1NoqgM\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\nBefore you exclaim that why, yes<\/em>, you are<\/em> doing me a favor by sharing your time and expertise with me and my readers, let me point out what should be obvious.<\/p>\nIt\u2019s a win-win for the writer and the source. I get help completing my assignment, and you get the credibility and other benefits that come with media attention.<\/p>\nKeep in mind that your competitors would probably be happy to step up. Writers have options, and some of them will understand the mutually beneficial relationship of writer and source. Those people will be happy to have me support them by giving them publicity.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Waste my time.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\nSo you think I\u2019m writing about the wrong topic, but you agree to answer my questions. You plan to talk about what you think I should be writing about, instead.<\/p>\nWhile I respect that you know more about your area of expertise than I do, my assignment isn\u2019t to poll a few experts for their opinions about my assigned topic.<\/p>\nMy job is to write about what I\u2019m paid to write about. If you can\u2019t help me do that, move along.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Be stingy.<\/strong><\/h3>\nWhether doing an email, telephone\/video, or in-person interview, make sure I can\u2019t quote you by using short, incomplete sentences.<\/p>\nSay something generic in a generic way. Avoid getting specific. The devil is in the details, and nobody likes the devil, so skip the details.<\/p>\nAnother good way to look like you\u2019re cooperating when you aren\u2019t is to say, \u201cThere\u2019s information about that online.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>4. Make it difficult to contact you.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/jxcMNv8wJIlb6Jp9ER\" width=\"480\" height=\"260\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/pomsmovie-stx-poms-movie-jxcMNv8wJIlb6Jp9ER\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\nWhen I need a very specific type of expertise, I often begin my search for experts with Google. That recently yielded a promising source, but when I clicked through to their website, there was no \u201ccontact\u201d option in the toolbar.<\/p>\nI had to hunt (and hunt \u2026 and hunt) for an email address. I eventually found it buried at the bottom of a long service description, but by then I was exhausted and needed a nap.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Tell me to use something from your blog post or another interview you\u2019ve done.<\/strong><\/h3>\nYou might as well tell me I\u2019m lazy, because only a lazy writer would do this.<\/p>\nThen there\u2019s the plagiarism risk. Imagine how impressed my editor would be if they ran my article through a plagiarism checker and saw that I copied and pasted from your website.<\/p>\nIt\u2019s not plagiarism if I have your permission to pull from your blog post, but it puts me in an awkward situation with my editor. It\u2019s also not how good writers gather quotes.<\/p>\nAnd suggesting that I just copy something you told another writer? Publications aren\u2019t paying for duplicate content, especially if it comes from a competitor\u2019s article.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Be a plagiarist.<\/strong><\/h3>\nAnd while we\u2019re talking about plagiarism, if you\u2019re doing an email interview, get the answers to the writer\u2019s questions by copying and pasting from someone else\u2019s website.<\/p>\nI recently used <a href=\"https:\/\/build-book-buzz.teachable.com\/p\/get-quoted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HARO (Help a Reporter Out),<\/a> a free service that connects journalists with sources, to find people who could answer my questions via email. Two of the people who responded provided answers that they copied and pasted from someone else\u2019s website \u2013 the same<\/em> someone else\u2019s website.<\/p>\nYes, their answers were identical.<\/p>\nAgain, picture my editor running my article through a plagiarism checker and discovering this.<\/p>\n(So I suppose that tip should be \u201cBe a plagiarist and<\/em> an idiot.\u201d)<\/p>\n<h3>7. Be a jerk.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/sRirXOIam0U00\" width=\"480\" height=\"284\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/amp-sass-imgfave-sRirXOIam0U00\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\nI am not required to use anything from an interview when I write an article. If you\u2019re rude or arrogant and I have enough of the right information from other sources, I might not have room for your comments.<\/p>\n<h2>How to make sure you get that media opportunity<\/h2>\nAre you a smart author who knows the value of publicity?
