How do you feel about honesty in book marketing? Is it important to your readers, or can you continually stretch the truth? <\/em><\/pre>\nLast week, I received an email from a professional acquaintance announcing, \u201cSo we became the #1 book on Amazon.\u201d<\/p>\n
Whoa! A parenting book was Amazon\u2019s top-selling book? How did the author knock out Cassidy Hutchinson\u2019s \u201cEnough\u201d or the Elon Musk biography?<\/p>\n
And how did a book using a pay-to-play author services company do it?<\/p>\n
Trust me, I was beyond impressed.<\/p>\n
Until I wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
Smoke and mirrors<\/h2>\nI pulled up Amazon\u2019s best-seller list and discovered that this \u201cbest-seller\u201d wasn\u2019t \u201cthe #1 book on Amazon.\u201d It wasn\u2019t even in the top 50.<\/p>\n
But it was<\/em> the \u201c#1 new release\u201d in the Motherhood category.<\/p>\n
Ohhhhhh. <\/em><\/p>\n
When this individual wrote, \u201cthe #1 book on Amazon,\u201d they meant, \u201c#1 new release in the Motherhood category.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
Now I feel foolish<\/h2>\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/simpsons-homer-bushes-3ohs7KViF6rA4aan5u\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They sucked me in, and I felt tricked. Duped. Manipulated. Now I feel foolish.<\/p>\n<p>I admire the author. We\u2019re connected on social media. Normally in a launch situation when I have some connection to the author and I\u2019m sure it\u2019s a good book (and I\u2019m certain this one is), I\u2019ll share information about it with my social networks.<\/p>\n<p>And, yeah, my networks include young mothers and grandparents who buy parenting books as gifts for their daughters.<\/p>\n<p>But not this time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By making me feel foolish, they have lost my trust.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll be fine without my support, of course. (I\u2019m not delusional.) Stick to the facts.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Avoid \u201calternative\u201d facts.<\/p>\n<p>Your book is only the top seller on Amazon if it is, indeed, ranked number one on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/best-sellers-books-Amazon\/zgbs\/books\/ref=zg_bs_nav_books_0\">the best-seller list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve achieved category best-seller status, bask in the glory. In addition, she and her husband\/business partner are professional marketers. If anyone could turn a parenting book into the top-seller on Amazon, it\u2019s them.<\/p>\n<p>It was a plausible claim.<\/p>\n<p>Readers understand this. If they know you\u2019re \u201cinternet famous\u201d or if you\u2019ve published blockbusters already, they\u2019ll believe that your book actually could be \u201c#1 on Amazon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But does that describe your track record? If it doesn\u2019t, that \u201c#1 on Amazon\u201d claim won\u2019t fly. Readers know how these things work, so they\u2019re increasingly skeptical.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Showcase your true accomplishments.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Answer these questions to identify potential accomplishments you can showcase without stretching the truth:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has your book been honored with <a href=\"https:\/\/buildbookbuzz.com\/book-awards\/\">an award<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Have you won writing awards, or have any of your short stories appeared in publications?<\/li>\n<li>Have you received industry recognition for knowledge or expertise that\u2019s relevant to your book?<\/li>\n<li>What fabulous things have <a href=\"https:\/\/buildbookbuzz.com\/9-places-to-look-for-readers-who-write-reviews\/\">early readers<\/a> said about your book? (And did you grab a screenshot?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t discount any achievement. Claim it, own it, share it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s okay if you haven\u2019t experienced any of this, by the way. \u201cAccomplishments\u201d aren\u2019t a necessity. But they\u2019re a valid alternative to the smoke and mirrors approach that can mislead or confuse.<\/p>\n<h2>How much do you value your readers\u2019 trust?<\/h2>\n<p>You get to decide how you might or might not stretch the truth in your book marketing.<\/p>\n<p>I choose honesty and transparency. <strong>You might think my approach is too rigid. And, hey, you might be right.<\/strong> But just as I\u2019m transparent because that\u2019s what I\u2019m comfortable with, you need to proceed with what works best for you.<\/p>\n<p>I encourage you to look at things through your readers\u2019 eyes first, though. I trusted the author who sent me that \u201c#1 on Amazon\u201d email. That trust was undermined by one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll get over it, as will your readers. But I move forward with even more skepticism than I had before that message dropped into my inbox.<\/p>\n<p><em>Have you ever felt tricked by marketing for any type of product?
