That”s right. I was a cheerleader.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I was a high school cheerleader for one memorable year.<\/p>\n

I learned about more than clapping, jumping, and how to polish white Keds, though. I discovered the importance of crowd and community support when facing a challenge, too.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s probably why I\u2019m still a cheerleader today, although now I\u2019m cheering for authors, not football and basketball players. (And I don’t wear cheerleading briefs dyed green to match my cheer sweater anymore.)<\/p>\n

You can do it, authors!<\/h2>\n

Jami Albright’s recent guest post<\/a> on her inspiring success as an indie author reminded me of the importance of cheering for other writers.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019ve tried to be the best community member that I can be. I cheer people on, I support them, I share their stuff, and I offer help when I can,” she wrote.<\/p>\n

As she noted, it\u2019s so important for us to take time away from our own book writing and marketing to support other authors we know, respect, or like.<\/p>\n

It’s counter-intuitive, but . . .<\/h2>\n

Perhaps what I\u2019m proposing seems counter-intuitive, especially when you already feel like you don\u2019t have enough time to do what\u2019s needed for your own book.<\/p>\n

How will you ever find the time to be a cheerleader for other authors, too?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s focus on the \u201cwhy\u201d before the \u201chow.\u201d Here\u2019s why it makes sense for you.<\/p>\n

5 reasons to cheer on other authors<\/h2>\n

1. It\u2019s the right thing to do.<\/b><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s better to give than to receive, right?<\/p>\n

2. You will learn.<\/b><\/h3>\n

Connecting with other authors will expose you to the tactics and tools they\u2019re using to promote their books.<\/p>\n

You could be privy to the \u201cbehind the scenes\u201d work that goes into certain types of promotions. That insider information can save you a great deal of time later if you decide to implement one of those tactics.<\/p>\n

3. You will create a valuable community.<\/b><\/h3>\n

The authors you start supporting today become the people you can turn to tomorrow when you need a recommendation for a cover designer, an editor, or a proofreader.<\/p>\n

And, when you support them, they will repay the favor by supporting you.<\/p>\n

4. It\u2019s good training.<\/b><\/h3>\n

When you cheer on other authors, you learn more about what kind of support\u00a0you\u00a0<\/em>will need when it\u2019s\u00a0your\u00a0<\/em>turn.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll have a better understanding of what to ask for and how to ask for it.<\/p>\n

5. You will make authors happy.<\/b><\/h3>\n

Imagine how excited you would be if another author tweeted an unexpected, but glowing, review of your new book! Don\u2019t you want to do that for someone else?<\/p>\n

It takes so little time<\/h2>\n

Supporting and helping your writer colleagues can take just a few minutes every day.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s so much in this for you that I can\u2019t imagine why you wouldn\u2019t want to do it.<\/p>\n
